FLOOR DRAINS:
An often overlooked area for fly activity. This is the site that can breed drain flies, fruit flies and phorid flies. They will breed in the sewage that accumulates in and around the drain. Repeated sweeping and mopping will cause an accumulation of food particles along the inside rim of the drain.
Pieces of the spaghetti mop will lodge in drain and drain cover. This in turn will allow the sewage sludge to build up in drains. Often, the drain covers will become "caked" with dirt and grime. Only small openings exist and this is how flies gain entry to areas. Floor drain covers come in a variety of sizes and designs. The fact is, the problems occur in all drains.
It is essential that drains and covers be cleaned regularly. Not only to guard against fly activity, but to insure there is sufficient water flow to drain lines. Dry drain traps can and will lead to American roach sightings, as they thrive in sanitary lines.
